The Guardians of the CHALLENGER RELIEF MAP

The Challenger Map Needs Your Support!

We are pleased to announce that The Challenger Map Advisory Group, under the chairmanship of Alan Clapp, and with the assistance of the Government of British Columbia, have prevented the destruction of The Challenger Relief Map of British Columbia, listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the Worlds Largest Relief Map.

Thanks to Air Canada, the map is now located in a safe storage area with ample work space at the Vancouver International Airport. Bekin's Moving and Storage have defrayed past storage charges and Williams Machinery have donated a fork lift to assist in the restoration of the map. We will now be able to clean, paint, repair minor breakage and bring the Challenger Map into the 21st Century by the installation of the latest in display and communications technology, special visual and lighting effects, and the integration of computer and video information terminals situated around the Map to allow citizens, visitors, and students to learn about the history, geography, travel, culture and beauty of British Columbia.

You can become a Guardian of the worlds largest relief map!

With your tax deductable donation of $2,500.00 or more to the foundation for the restoration of the map, you will receive a unique certificate created from material that was part of the original base of the map when it was located from 1954 to 1998 at the Pacific National Exhibition. It will acknowledge you or your organization as the protector of one of the many panels that make up the Challenger Map. Your name or corporate name will also be engraved on an informative panel, placed in a prominent location at the map's new home, honouring you and/or your organization as an early supporter of the recovery and restoration of the Challenger Relief Map.

We also need your skills for the restoration of the Challenger Map.

The restoration of the map will require people with carpentry, painting, electrical and mechanical skills. But more than that, we want volunteers who are willing to learn these skills and work with the experts. As the project progresses many hands will make light work in an exciting venture. We would like to hear from anyone interested in assisting on this project. (See the e-mail link under the map on this page.)
